Six challenges when relocating overseas with children

Moving with children is not an easy task. The process is riddled with challenges and these escalate quickly when relocating overseas. With the pressures of your employer and those of your family, it can be difficult to take to the time to think about how to deal with the challenges you face when moving with the kids. Here are six of the most common challenges you’ll face when relocating overseas with children.

1. Finding the right school

Your child’s entire life at the moment revolves around school and their friendships. Relocating them to another country exposes them to a new style of education and a new group of children with different cultural upbringings. Finding the right school will help your child feel more settled, more quickly, so it pays to do the research to find the perfect one before you move.

2. Picking the right house

When you move, your circumstances may change. It might pay to live closer to work, or maybe it’s better for the entire family if you live closer to the school your children will attend. The kids will have an attachment to their current home and bedroom so it’s important to consider their needs when you move. What might seem comfortable in the short term won’t always be the case.

3. Immunisation

Keeping your children happy and healthy is a priority no matter where you live, but you may need to take extra steps to prevent them from getting sick in your new country of residence. Speak to your doctor about relevant vaccinations you and your child may need before they leave the country. Your doctor will also be able to inform you on how to keep your family healthy in your new home.

4. Pack what the kids need

It’s important that your children are part of the packing process so they don’t feel left out. Be clear on what they can and can’t bring and allow them to sort through their own belongings. Don’t forget to consider packing some of your children’s favourite comfort foods if they’re allowed to be imported. They might not be as easy to come by in your new country, so consider packing what you can.

5. Start building your child’s network

Studies have shown that moving house can be problematic for children and can leave them feeling anxious and introverted. It’s not enough to rely on your child’s new school to help them form the friendships needed to help them settle into their new home. Research hobby groups, sporting teams or support groups in your new neighbourhood start building up their network. It can also be beneficial for them to have someone who understands what they’re going through to talk to.

6. Have fun!

Many children will react to a relocation the same way their parents do. If you’re stressed about the move or you aren’t enjoying the process, it can be difficult for them to. Set aside some time to spend with them once you’ve arrived at your new home to help them feel comfortable and settled in their new environment.
