Garages often double as a storage unit for junk, tools, the Christmas tree and anything else you manage to squeeze in there. So when the time comes to pack up and move house, packing can get very confusing. With so many miscellaneous objects in the garage, it can be difficult to know where to start.
Start by sorting
With so many different types of objects in the garage, sorting through them can be both difficult and time consuming. As soon as you know you’re going to be moving house, start sorting through your things. Be sure to avoid packing any unwanted or dangerous goods.
With many household dangerous goods such as chemicals stored in the family garage, it’s important to dispose of these now.
Be ruthless when it comes to throwing out items or giving things away. Often things stored in the garage are bulky and heavy so they can be a costly hassle to move. Why not hold a garage sale and make some money off the things you no longer need?
Organise your packing materials
Oddly shaped items in the garage also make it more difficult to pack. Where you can, use a secure toolbox to keep your smaller hand tools such as screwdrivers and hammers. That way they don’t get lost in the moving process. Remember, tools are heavy so keep that in mind when you’re trying to fill moving boxes as you’ll struggle to lift anything too heavy.
Be creative with your moving boxes and consider using containers of various sizes and shapes to keep your lose items that can easily go missing during a move, like nails and screws. Where you can, pack tools and the Christmas tree into their original packaging boxes for easier transportation.
To drive or not to drive
The largest item in your garage is probably a vehicle of some description. Consider whether driving your car and towing your motorbike and push bikes is the best solution for relocating. Although it might seem like the best option now, the costs will add up, especially if you’re relocating interstate or to the other side of the country.
In many cases, it can work out beneficial to leave the vehicle relocation to the professionals. Not only will you save money on fuel, you’ll also protect your car from clocking up too many kilometres.
