Moving Antiques Checklist

When it comes to moving fine art and antiques, there are a number of things you can do to safeguard your items. With so many factors at play throughout the process of a move, it can be difficult to protect your antiques from damage. That’s why we’ve put together a helpful moving checklist to ensure you manage the move to the best of your ability.

Things to do now

  • If you’re going to leave the delicate job of moving your antiques to professionals, it’s time to compare some quotes and book them in. When searching for a removalist you can trust to handle your valuable and delicate art, look for quality checks and accreditation. For overseas deliveries, find a reputable company through the global association, International Convention of Exhibition and Fine Art Transporters (ICEFAT).
  • Collect packaging materials that will protect your antiques from damage during transit.
  • Organise your quarantine paperwork if you’re moving antiques overseas.
  • Measure spaces to ensure your antiques are going to fit through doorways, hallways and into a removals vehicle. Don’t forget to measure the spaces and entryways at the delivery end too.

7-10 days before the move

  • If you’ve hired a removalist to do the job for you, confirm the details of pickup and delivery.
  • Pack your antiques in the best quality packing material to protect it from damage.
  • Ensure the storage conditions are right for your antiques at the delivery end to promote their longevity. These conditions include temperature, humidity and light. For more information on how to protect your antiques in your home, read our helpful blog.

Day of the move

  • Provide removalists with access to your home. If parking or driveway access is an issue, you may need to save a parking spot if you live on a busy street.
  • Load the antiques into a removals vehicle and secure it to prevent movement during transit.

In your new home

  • Unpack and discard packaging materials.
  • Place antiques where they will be stored or displayed in your home and test the conditions in the room to ensure they are right for your art.
