They might be some of the softer items in the house, but that doesn’t make them the easiest to pack for a move. From folding or hanging, to keeping mould out of towels, there are a number of things to consider when it comes to packing soft goods. Here are some of our tips to packing soft goods when you move house.
Delcutter
Before you begin packing your entire linen cupboard and wardrobe into your moving boxes, sort through your things and get rid of what you don’t need. Decluttering is a great way to ensure you don’t waste any of your valuable space on things you don’t want anymore. If you’re thinking of getting rid of some of your quality unwanted items, ask Grace for a specially marked ‘move house make a difference’ carton and donate them to the St Vincent de Paul Society. We’ll donate your unwanted goods to your local Vinnies store on your behalf so you can help Australians in need just by moving house.
Put aside some clothes
Before you start packing everything into boxes, think about which clothes you’re going to need access to sooner. Have you set aside an outfit to wear on the day you move? How about the first day you spend in the new house? You don’t want to have to spend your first day in the house worrying about where you’ll get your clothes from.
To hang or fold?
Linens can be both hung or folded for a move. Before folding linen and placing into a cardboard box, line the empty box with packing paper. Use crumpled paper to fill in any gaps and help prevent any movement within the box during transit.
Folding clothes can cause wrinkles to form which means you’ll have to iron everything a lot sooner than you originally planned. If you want to avoid the extra laundry, hanging clothes in a specially made wardrobe box can help prevent lines and wrinkles, keeping your clothes and linen in a neat and tidy fashion.
Preventing mould
Moisture, mould and insects are something you’ll need to be wary of when packing your soft goods. To avoid damage caused by these three things, pack your linens into plastic bags and line your cardboard box with clean paper. You might also want to consider shrink wrapping your clothes to prevent moisture from seeping in.
Group your clothes
Pack your clothes in a way that makes the most sense to you. Does it make more sense to pack all winter clothes together? Maybe you’d prefer to have all of your tops together and bottoms separated instead? Whichever way you decide, be consistent and pack that way. Don’t forget to label every moving box accordingly.
