Statistics New Zealand has revealed the number of new houses consented grew 22 per cent in September 2012, compared with September 2011.
There were 1520 new houses consented in September, including 186 apartments.
Industry and labour statistics manager Blair Cardno said Canterbury experienced the most growth, particularly from Christchurch city as well as Waimakariri and Selwyn districts while Auckland also contributed to the high figures.
“The number of new houses was up 80 per cent in Canterbury and up 50 per cent in Auckland,” he said.
In Canterbury, earthquake-related building consents totaled $17 million for residential work.
