The First Few Days in Your New Home

You’ve just moved into your new home – congratulations! There are a couple of things you can do to lay the foundations of your new home in the first few days of moving in.

Prepare a survival kit

On your first night in your new home, you’re likely to have a stack of boxes you don’t really want to unpack and sort through. Save yourself the hassle and pack an overnight survival kit. Pack the essentials including your pyjamas, toiletries, medication and a change of clothes. Don’t forget to also include household essentials like toilet paper, pet food, a first aid kit and soaps.

On arrival

Check that your house has electricity and internet connectivity. Test the smoke and fire alarms and check that the fence is secure around the pool if you have one. Start by setting up the bedroom so you can enjoy a good night’s sleep on the first night in the house. Then, unpack and install large appliances such as the fridge.

Technology

Set up a dedicated area for all of your technological gadgets including mobile phones and their chargers so you don’t misplace them during the unpack. You’d be surprised at how quickly things can go missing when you’re setting up the new house.

Unpack the house

Start by unpacking and setting up the rooms you need access to first. The kitchen is one of the busiest areas in the home, so make sure you have access and keep the areas clear. Organise the cupboards while you unpack so you don’t have to worry about going back and doing that again later. Follow the same process of unpacking and organising in the bathroom too. It’s another one of the busiest rooms in the house and is likely to become cluttered.

Clean up

Once you’ve unpacked the house and the last shirt has been folded and put away in the wardrobe, it’s time to do a clean up. Remove and throw away any of the packing rubbish and moving boxes left behind. Don’t let the mess pile up and become a problem later.
