For years New Zealanders have been crossing the ditch and moving to Australia. But a more confident New Zealand is continuing to lure back its citizens in strong numbers.
Estimates show that nearly 500,000 New Zealanders are currently living and working in Australia, but recently, New Zealand’s numbers have been increasing. It’s not just returning citizens who are falling in love with the country, but people from all over the world.
Australian citizens are also moving to New Zealand in record numbers.
Five years ago, New Zealand was losing 30,000 citizens annually but in 2016, the country reported a gain of 70,000 migrants and long-term arrivals.
Why the change?
New Zealand’s economy has started to perform well and capital cities are making changes to their industries to help draw people in. An example of this is in Wellington where the city has been dubbed ‘Silicon Welly’ and encourages IT specialists (mainly from the US) to relocate there.
In comparison, Australia’s economy is beginning to wane and the cost of living continues to climb, especially in Sydney.
New Zealand has also consistently been rated as one of the best countries in the world to live and one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
